The fastest way to get a floor plan is not always the safest way to use one. Start by looking for existing records, but treat every recovered drawing as evidence to verify, not automatic proof of what is in the house today.

The right answer depends on why you need the plan. Furniture planning may tolerate a basic layout. A structural remodel, addition, permit application, or contractor pricing set needs a much higher-confidence base.
Identify the authority that issued permits for the property. A mailing address can fall under a city, county, township, or another agency, so confirm the actual jurisdiction before searching. Gather the street address, parcel number, approximate construction year, prior permit numbers, and names of any builder or design professional you know.
Records access varies sharply. NYC311 directs property plan requests through the Department of Buildings and says plans may be viewed without a copying charge. Austin Development Services provides online search portals and a public-information-request path. Miami-Dade County maintains digitized and microfilm plan records for properties in its jurisdiction.
California illustrates why a generic promise is risky. The City of Irvine explains that duplication can require owner authorization, a notarized affidavit, and permission from the licensed professional who signed the plans. San Diego's plan-copy procedure also distinguishes viewing from obtaining copies. Search the office's current instructions before assuming a plan can be downloaded.
A records search works better when it names the project and file types. Ask whether the office holds the approved architectural set, permit application, correction notices, inspection record, certificate of occupancy, site or plot plan, structural sheets, and later alteration permits. A single original floor plan may hide twenty years of additions and interior changes.
Use a specific request such as: "Please identify building plans and residential alteration permits for 123 Main Street, parcel 000-000, including the original construction set and permit 24-1234." San Diego's records-request guidance notes that addresses, parcel numbers, project numbers, and requested record types help staff locate useful files.
Keep the record source, file date, permit number, approval status, and any reproduction restriction with the drawing. A detached PDF loses important context once it is forwarded to a contractor or drafting team.
If public records are missing or slow, look for the builder, developer, architect, residential designer, engineer, or plan publisher. Names may appear on a permit card, title block, neighborhood plat, closing packet, warranty document, electrical panel label, subdivision sign, or HOA architectural file.
A base model is still useful. It can reduce discovery time and show design intent. It should not be treated as a measured record of a particular lot without comparison to the actual house.
Previous owners, the current owner's closing file, an HOA, and contractors who completed prior work may hold better records than the original construction file. Search email and cloud storage for the address, permit numbers, contractor names, and file extensions such as PDF, DWG, or RVT. Review paper folders for surveys, appraisals, insurance diagrams, cabinet layouts, and addition drawings.

An as-built scope records the conditions needed for a defined purpose. It may include floor plans only, or expand to exterior elevations, roof geometry, sections, openings, site relationships, fixtures, visible systems, photographs, and selected construction details. Scope should follow the next decision, not a one-size-fits-all package.
For a home addition, the useful capture area often extends beyond the new room. The drafter may need the full affected level, the existing exterior, foundation and roof tie-in zones, adjacent openings, utilities, and enough site information to coordinate setbacks and access. Structural conditions hidden behind finishes may still require investigation by the appropriate professional.
